Self-Employed Taxes in Arizona (Flat Tax)
One of the lowest flat income-tax rates in the country — and what freelancers still owe federally
Arizona moved to a low flat income tax, giving freelancers one of the gentler state-tax burdens in the country. That makes the federal side — especially the 15.3% self-employment tax — by far the bigger part of your bill, and the part worth your attention.

Arizona's flat rate, in one line
Arizona applies a single low flat income-tax rate (around 2.5% — verify the current figure) to taxable income, with no climbing brackets. For most freelancers that means the state slice is small and easy to forecast.
Your tax stack as an Arizona freelancer
1. Federal income tax
On net profit from Schedule C, at federal brackets.
2. Self-employment tax — 15.3%
On net self-employment earnings (Schedule SE); both halves, half deductible. This is usually your largest single tax as an Arizona freelancer.
3. Arizona state income tax
The low flat rate on Arizona taxable income. File a state return and make state estimated payments if you'll owe over the threshold.
4. Quarterly estimates (federal + state)
Form 1040-ES for the IRS and Arizona's equivalent — four times a year. Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT), Arizona's version of sales tax, applies only if you sell taxable goods/services; register with ADOR if so.
Deductions cut all three
- Mileage (standard rate, verify) or actual vehicle costs.
- Home office — simplified or actual.
- Phone, internet, software, equipment (Section 179).
- Self-employed health insurance and QBI (up to 20%, federal).
- Retirement — SEP-IRA / solo 401(k).
Worked example: a Phoenix freelancer
Sam nets $65,000. The 15.3% SE tax and federal income tax dominate the bill; Arizona's flat rate adds a comparatively small, predictable amount. Sam sets aside a fixed percentage monthly and pays quarterly — the low state rate makes the math easy, but the federal discipline is what keeps him penalty-free.
